Downey, Pieciak, Fitzgerald & Co., P.C., is a merged firm of Downey, Sweeney, Fitzgerald & Co., P.C. in Springfield, Massachusetts and Pieciak & Company, P.C., in Brattleboro, Vermont and South Hadley. Massachusetts. Downey, Sweeney, Fitzgerald & Co., P.C., traces its origins to 1950 and Pieciak & Company, P.C., was established in 1983 as the successor to an accounting practice that dates back to 1957.

Our Team


Managing Shareholder and Expert in Business Planning, Mergers, and Acquisitions

Joe is the managing shareholder, stockholder, president and founder of Pieciak & Company.  He has over 40 years experience in public accounting.  He is responsible for all services to clients, as well as the overall management of the firm.  Client services include business planning, business acquisitions and sales, succession planning and problem solving.  His extensive background in mergers, acquisitions and other capital events on either side of a deal makes him well-versed in the intricacies of these multifaceted transactions. He advises on deal structure from an economic and tax perspective and works closely with client management before and during the entire negotiation process.

Joe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from American International College.

Shareholder, Director of Tax Services

Gary is a shareholder of the firm, and is the Director of Tax Services for the firm.  Additionally, Gary serves as the Office Managing Partner for the firm’s South Hadley office.  Gary has been in public practice since 1988, and is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  He has an undergraduate degree in Accounting from Western New England University and a master’s degree in Taxation from Bentley University.

Gary’s areas of practice include tax planning, tax compliance for corporations, pass-through entities, and high-net-worth individuals, mergers and acquisitions, choice of entity for new businesses, representation before the Internal Revenue Service.

Gary is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants, and he currently serves on the Board of Directors of Westfield Bank, and is the Chairperson of their Audit Committee.


Vermont Individual

Tax Manager 

Since joining our firm in 2006, Jessica has served as our dedicated Tax Manager, focusing on delivering exceptional individual tax services. Her expertise lies in navigating the complexities of taxation to ensure our clients receive personalized and effective financial solutions.


Jessica earned her Bachelor of Science in business administration from Fitchburg State University, equipping her with a solid foundation for addressing the unique needs of our clients. As our Tax Manager, she plays a pivotal role in leading our tax services team with precision and expertise.


Her commitment to staying abreast of the latest tax regulations and her passion for delivering client-centric services make her an invaluable asset to our team. With years of experience and a comprehensive understanding of individual tax matters, Jessica is ready to guide you through the intricacies of your financial landscape. Trust her to optimize your tax strategy and help you achieve your financial goals.

Business Tax Manager

Mark possesses more than 40 years of extensive accounting and tax expertise, delivering exceptional services to individuals and closely held entities such as partnerships and limited liability companies across diverse industries, with a particular focus on corporations.

His academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a major in accounting from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Massachusetts Individual
Tax Manager

Maggie is new to our Firm, beginning with us in October 2023, as the Tax Manager in the South Hadley Office. She comes to us with thirty plus years of tax and accounting experience, as well as a deep educational background.

Maggie has previously worked for Big 4 Firms, as well as several regional and local CPA practices. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Smith College, double majoring in Math and Russian Civilization. She went on to earn her MBA in Accounting from WNEC as well as a Master’s in Taxation from Golden Gate University. She later received her CPA license, as well as the Personal Financial Specialist and Certified Financial Specialist designations.

Maggie has, and continues to be, actively involved in several AICPA volunteer committees, helping to steer accounting policy, as well as serving on the Smith College Class of 89 Board for over 25 years. At Rep Richard Neal’s request, Maggie has testified in front of the Ways and Means Committee in Washington DC, regarding the Alternative Minimum Tax regime.

Maggie’s valuable education and diverse experience make her an asset to both our Firm and our clients. Her ability to develop a quick rapport, exuding confidence and tax expertise, puts clients at ease, trusting her ability to help resolve any tax situation.

Audit and Assurance Manager

Chad is our Audit and Assurance Manager with over eight years of public accounting experience and is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of Massachusetts.  Since joining our team in 2019, Chad has been dedicated to providing a variety of audit and assurance services, with expertise in nonprofit entities, HUD regulated properties, single audits in compliance with 2 CFR Part 200, audits in compliance with Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards “yellow book”, and homeowners associations.  His approach to managing complex audits has made him an integral part of our team.

Chad also has proficiency in taxation and has provided federal and state tax advice to businesses and individuals in a number of different industries. 

Chad holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Western New England University and a Master of Science degree in Accounting from Westfield State University.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA).  



Payroll Service Manager

Jamie, an integral member of our team since 2015, specializes in delivering comprehensive payroll services to local clients and businesses. Armed with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Castleton State College, Jamie brings a unique perspective to her role.

Her dedication to excellence is exemplified by her tenure as a payroll manager since 2019, showcasing a commitment to precision and professionalism in managing financial processes. With a wealth of expertise, Jamie plays a crucial role in ensuring our clients' payroll needs are met with accuracy and efficiency.
